Two treatment trips compared — Chișinău and Budapest

This guide covers travel, process and cost. It contains no clinical advice.

On published prices a tooth costs about £450 in Chișinău and about £710 in Budapest — but the Budapest list states the abutment is included and the Chișinău one does not print an abutment price at all, so the real gap is smaller than it looks. Both cities have direct flights from London and Dublin. Budapest gives you EU membership, more flights and an itemised price list in pounds. Chișinău gives you a lower base price and a quieter, cheaper week. Neither is a mistake.

The prices, side by side

Add a plausible abutment and a CT scan to the Chișinău side and the two land close enough that price stops being the deciding factor. That is a useful thing to discover early, because it frees you to choose on the criteria that actually affect your experience: how easily you can get there, what happens if something needs attention, and whether the clinic will put its answers in writing.

Getting there

Luton, Stansted and Dublin all reach Chișinău non-stop, and London to RMO takes about three hours twenty. The airport is small, close to the city and easy to move through — which sounds like a small thing until you are doing it two days after surgery. Budapest is a larger hub with more frequencies and more airline choice, which mainly helps if your dates are inflexible or you are flying from a regional airport.

We do not publish fares for either. A fare quoted today is wrong within a week, and a wrong number on this page would be worse than no number. Price your own dates; the difference between the two cities on airfare is usually smaller than the difference on treatment.

What the week itself is like

Chișinău is quieter and cheaper. Budapest is livelier and has more to do if you are travelling with someone who is not having treatment. For the two days after surgery neither of those matters much — what matters is a short walk to the clinic and somewhere quiet to sit — but for the rest of the week it is a genuine difference, and worth weighing honestly rather than pretending you will spend the whole trip resting.

The EU question, without the hand-waving

Hungary being in the EU changes the regulatory framework a clinic operates under and the routes available to you if you want to complain. That is a real advantage and it deserves weight. What it does not do is make any individual Hungarian clinic better than any individual Moldovan one — regulation sets a floor, and the distance between the floor and a good clinic is entirely down to the clinic.

So use it as a tiebreaker, not as a filter. If two clinics answer your questions equally well and one is inside the EU, that is a reason to lean. If the Moldovan clinic names its surgeon, publishes its warranty terms and answers in writing while the Hungarian one does not, the EU line will not save you.
