Do you need a visa to visit Moldova for dental treatment?

This guide covers travel, process and cost. It contains no clinical advice.

Citizens of the United Kingdom, the European Union, the United States, Canada and Australia do not need a visa to enter Moldova for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond the date you plan to leave, and have at least one blank page. Dental treatment falls under an ordinary visit — there is no separate medical visa to apply for.

Who needs a visa for Moldova, and who does not

Moldova operates a visa-free regime for citizens of the European Union, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, Switzerland and around seventy other countries. The allowance is 90 days in any 180-day period, which is far longer than even a complex staged implant trip requires. Entry is granted on arrival with a passport; there is no fee, no application form and no invitation letter for tourism or private medical visits.

Two details are worth knowing before you book. First, Moldova is not part of the Schengen Area, so time spent in Chișinău does not consume your Schengen allowance — relevant if you travel in Europe often. Second, visa policy is set by the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and does change; the authoritative list is on mfa.gov.md, and it is the only source worth trusting over a clinic's marketing page, including ours.

If you hold a passport not covered by the visa-free list, you will need an e-visa or a consular visa before travelling. Apply before you commit to treatment dates, not after — a rejected or delayed visa with a booked treatment slot is an expensive way to learn this.

What to carry at the border

How to get to Chișinău from the UK and Ireland

Chișinău's airport carries the IATA code RMO and is the country's only international airport. Direct flights operate from London Luton and London Stansted with Wizz Air, and from Dublin with FlyOne, HiSky and SkyUp. London to Chișinău takes about three hours twenty minutes. Where a direct flight does not suit your dates, Chișinău's roughly 71 non-stop destinations make connecting through Bucharest, Vienna, Munich, Istanbul or Warsaw straightforward.

Because routes and frequencies change every season, treat any flight table — including one on a clinic's website — as a starting point rather than a fact. Check the airport's own destination list and the airline directly before you plan treatment dates around a specific connection.

Direct-flight availability is the single most volatile item on this page. We re-check it every six months and date the page accordingly. If the date at the top of this article is more than six months old, verify before booking.

How long to stay, and how to plan the trip around treatment

Trip length depends entirely on what treatment you are having, and that is a question for the dentist who has seen your imaging — not for a travel guide. What a travel guide can tell you is how to structure the booking so that the clinical plan drives the trip, rather than the other way round.

Does travel insurance cover dental treatment abroad?

Standard travel insurance covers emergencies that happen while you travel. It does not cover planned treatment you flew out specifically to receive, and it does not cover corrective work if a planned procedure does not go as hoped. One line from the UK's travel-health service belongs in your planning rather than in the small print: treatment that goes wrong overseas is generally paid for by the patient, and NHS aftercare should not be assumed.

What protects you instead is the written agreement with the clinic — what is guaranteed, for how long, who funds a return trip for revision work, and how aftercare is handled once you are back home. That is a contract question rather than an insurance question, and it is the single most important thing to settle before you pay a deposit.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a special medical visa for dental treatment in Moldova?

No. Private dental treatment falls under an ordinary visit. Visa-free nationals enter on a passport, and nationals who do need a visa apply for the standard short-stay type, not a separate medical category.

Is Moldova in the Schengen Area?

No. Moldova is not a Schengen member, so days spent there do not count towards your Schengen 90/180 allowance. Entry is a separate process from Schengen entry.

How long can I stay in Moldova without a visa?

Up to 90 days within any 180-day period for visa-free nationalities. No dental treatment plan requires anything close to that, including staged implant work with two separate trips.

Do I need to speak Romanian or Russian to get around?

You will manage in English in the parts of Chișinău that serve visitors, but do not rely on it for anything that matters clinically. Confirm before you travel that you will have an interpreter or an English-speaking coordinator for every appointment, and that the paperwork you are asked to sign arrives in a language you read fluently.

Can I fly home the same day as my treatment?

That depends on the procedure and is a question for your dentist, not for us. As a planning rule, leave a buffer day — a schedule with no slack turns a small complication into a missed flight.

Before you book anything

The travel side of a dental trip to Moldova is genuinely simple: no visa for most visitors, direct flights from London and Dublin, no paperwork beyond a passport. The part that deserves your attention is not the border — it is the clinic. Before you spend anything on flights, work through the verification questions in our guide to checking a dental clinic abroad, and make sure you have a written treatment plan and a written aftercare arrangement.

Not sure a clinic is what it claims to be? Nine questions will tell you, and they work for any clinic in any country — including ours.
