Moldova or Romania for dental work: the comparison nobody publishes honestly
This guide covers travel, process and cost. It contains no clinical advice.
Romania wins on EU membership and direct flights; Moldova wins on price and on being a small enough market that you can actually check the clinics in it. If EU patient-rights protection or a short direct flight matters more than the price difference, choose Romania. If cost is decisive and you will do the verification work yourself, Moldova is the stronger option — with real trade-offs stated below.
What each one publishes
Both countries are cheaper than the UK, and the gap between them is narrower than the gap between either and home. These are published prices from one clinic in each, read on 15 August 2026 — true for those clinics, not averages for either country.
Read carefully, the Bucharest implant price is quoted as covering placement, abutment and crown together, while the Chișinău one covers the fixture alone. Compare the bundles, not the headline numbers, or you will conclude Romania is more expensive when the two pages are describing different amounts of work.
Where Moldova loses: the EU line
Romania is a member state, so EU rules apply: the medical devices framework, GDPR, and the cross-border healthcare directive, which gives patients a defined route for complaints and, in defined circumstances, reimbursement. If something goes wrong, you are inside a legal system your own country recognises and engages with.
Moldova is not in the EU. It has an association agreement and has been aligning parts of its regulatory framework, but a patient from Dublin or Manchester treated in Chișinău has no EU patient-rights instrument to rely on. Protection there is contractual: what the clinic wrote down, and nothing else. That does not make Moldova a bad choice, but it changes what you must insist on before paying — and it makes the guarantee and aftercare terms far more important than they would be in Cluj.
Travel: closer than the reputation suggests
Moldova's reputation as hard to reach is out of date. Chișinău has direct services from both London and Dublin and around 71 non-stop destinations overall, and the flight from London is roughly twenty minutes longer than the flight to Bucharest. Romania still wins on breadth — more cities, more carriers, more redundancy if a flight is cancelled — but this is no longer a criterion that decides the question on its own.
Cost: real, and travel no longer eats it
Moldova generally advertises lower prices than Romania, and the direction is real. Because both destinations are reachable directly and at comparable flight times, travel costs no longer differ enough to close the treatment gap the way they would if one required a connection. What still matters is case size: on a large treatment the saving dominates comfortably, and on a small one the fixed cost of any trip consumes it regardless of which country you pick.
Compare completed-case totals, not advertised entry prices. "From €310 per implant" typically excludes the abutment, the crown, imaging and any preparatory work — in both countries.
Market size, and why small can be an advantage
Romania has a large, established dental tourism sector with many clinics competing for international patients. That brings choice, competitive pricing and clinics with deep experience of foreign patients. It also brings variance: in a large market, the distance between the best and the worst clinic is wide, and marketing quality does not track clinical quality.
Moldova's sector is much smaller. Fewer clinics means less choice and thinner infrastructure for international patients. It also means the clinics doing serious international work are few enough to identify individually and reputationally exposed in a way that an operator in a market of thousands is not. Whether that is an advantage depends entirely on how much verification you are willing to do yourself.
Which fits which patient
Frequently asked questions
Is Moldova cheaper than Romania for dental implants?
Generally yes on advertised prices. Because both are reachable on direct flights at similar flight times, travel costs no longer differ enough to close that gap — case size matters far more than destination.
Does the EU cross-border healthcare directive cover treatment in Moldova?
No. Moldova is not an EU member state, so EU patient-rights instruments do not apply. In Romania they do.
Are there direct flights to Moldova from the UK?
Yes. Wizz Air flies direct from London Luton and London Stansted, and FlyOne, HiSky and SkyUp fly direct from Dublin. London to Chișinău is about 3h20.
Which country has better dentists?
No honest answer exists at country level. Variation between clinics within either country is larger than any average difference between them.
