The real total cost of dental treatment abroad
This guide covers travel, process and cost. It contains no clinical advice.
Take four missing teeth. A UK price list that starts at £2,100 per implant with crown puts the treatment at £8,400. A published Chișinău list puts four implants and four aesthetic zirconia crowns at 42,000 lei — about £1,798 at the reference rate on 15 August 2026. The gap is roughly £6,600, which is why people get on planes. But neither figure includes abutments, imaging, extractions or grafting, and only one of them includes four flights, ten nights and two blocks of leave. Fill those in before you decide, because on a small case they eat the entire difference.
What the published prices actually say
Almost every article on this subject quotes a saving percentage and no prices. So here are the prices, each one taken from the page that publishes it, with the date we read it and a note on what kind of figure it is. A price set by regulation, a price on a clinic's own list, and a price in an advertisement are three different things, and the difference matters more than the number.
Look at what the Chișinău list does not contain: the abutment, the component that connects the implant to the crown. It is not on the published page, so it is not in any total you build from that page. This is not a Moldovan habit — it is how the whole market prices, and it is the single most useful question you can ask anywhere: what is the complete price, and what is not in it?
The same case, priced twice
Four missing teeth, four implants, four crowns, no grafting assumed. This is a large enough case for travel to make arithmetic sense, and small enough to be common. Both totals below are built from the published lists above, so if a price changes, these change with it.
So: £8,400 against roughly £1,798, before the missing lines. Even if abutments, imaging and a graft added a thousand pounds to the Chișinău side, and even if you spent £1,500 on four flights and ten nights, the case would still land several thousand pounds apart. That is the honest version of the saving, and it is large.
Now do the same sum for one crown. UK private crown work is in the hundreds; the flights and hotel are not far behind. The saving does not survive the trip. This is why the useful question is never "is treatment abroad cheaper" — it is "is my case big enough for the fixed costs of getting there to disappear into it".
What the week itself costs
Being in Chișinău is inexpensive, and this is the part people over-budget rather than under-budget. Crowd-sourced averages give a sense of scale: they are not quotes, but they are enough to plan a daily allowance without guessing.
Flights are the line we deliberately do not put a number on. Non-stop routes run from two London airports and from Dublin, and the journey is a little over three hours — but any fare we printed today would be stale before you read it, and a stale number in a budget is worse than a blank line. Price your own dates, then put the real figure in the table.
The line nobody budgets: what if it needs fixing
The UK's travel-health service is direct about this one: repairs to overseas work land on the patient, and aftercare at home is not guaranteed to be simple. Implant work is staged over months, so this is not a remote scenario — it is a normal part of the treatment arc that happens to take place 2,000 km from the person who did the work.
Put a number against it. Ask the clinic, in writing, who pays if a crown fails at eight months, whether a return flight is included in any warranty, and what happens if the correction has to be done at home instead. A clinic that has treated many international patients has an answer ready. One that treats the question as pessimism has answered it a different way.
Frequently asked questions
How much do four dental implants cost abroad compared to the UK?
From published lists on 15 August 2026: four single-tooth implants with crowns start at £8,400 in the UK, while four implants and four aesthetic zirconia crowns on a Chișinău clinic's published list come to 42,000 lei, about £1,798. Neither figure includes abutments, imaging or grafting, and the second does not include travel.
Does the NHS pay for dental implants?
Not routinely. NHS Band 3, at £332.10 in England, covers crowns, bridges and dentures. Implants are generally private work, which is why the realistic UK comparison for most people is the private price, not the band charge.
Why is the advertised price so much lower than the final one?
Entry prices usually cover the implant fixture alone. The abutment and crown are separate lines, and imaging, extractions and grafting are separate again. Ask for the complete price and the list of exclusions in the same message.
Is it worth travelling for a single crown or implant?
Usually not. Travel costs barely change with the size of the case, so on small treatment they consume the whole saving. The arithmetic works on multiple implants and full-arch work.
What happens if the work fails after I get home?
Official advice puts repairs at your expense and treats NHS aftercare as uncertain rather than assured. Get the clinic's warranty terms in writing before you book, including who pays for a return flight.
