What a crown costs on the NHS, privately, and abroad
This guide covers travel, process and cost. It contains no clinical advice.
In England, a crown falls in NHS Band 3 at £332.10, and that single charge covers everything else in the same course of treatment. Privately abroad, a published Budapest list shows £180 for a porcelain-fused-to-metal crown and £290 for zirconium; a Chișinău list shows 3,000 lei for an economy zirconia crown and 5,000 lei for an aesthetic one, roughly £128 and £214. Those differences are real and completely irrelevant if you have to fly for them: the cheapest flight will cost more than the entire saving.
What a crown costs, in four places
What you are actually choosing between
The price differences within each list are about material, not quality of care. Metal-ceramic is the cheaper, long-established option with a metal substructure. Zirconia is milled from a single ceramic block; the economy version is monolithic and strong, while the layered aesthetic version costs more because it looks better in the places people notice. Which one suits a given tooth is a clinical judgement, not a budget one, and it is worth having that conversation before looking at prices at all.
A back molar and a front incisor have different requirements. Paying for the aesthetic option on a tooth nobody sees is the most common way to overspend in this category, in any country.
When a crown is worth travelling for
About £1,284 for six. Six crowns privately in the UK would run into several thousand, and at that point a flight and a few nights start to look like a rounding error rather than a decision. That is the threshold: not the material, not the country, but how many units are on the plan.
If you are here about one tooth, have it done at home and keep this page. Plans in this area rarely stay at one tooth, and the moment a second and third appear the arithmetic turns over fast.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a crown cost on the NHS?
£332.10 in England, as a Band 3 course of treatment. That charge covers all other treatment in the same course, so if you need fillings at the same time they are included.
How much is a private crown in the UK?
Private UK crown prices vary widely by practice and material; we do not publish a UK private crown figure because we have not found a published list we are willing to cite for it. The NHS charge above is exact, and the overseas figures are from named clinic price lists.
Is it worth going abroad for a crown?
For one crown, no. The saving is at most around £200 against the NHS charge, which no flight and hotel will fit inside. For six or more, the arithmetic changes completely.
Which crown material should I choose?
That is a clinical decision about the specific tooth, its position and how much of it remains. Metal-ceramic and monolithic zirconia are both durable; layered aesthetic zirconia costs more and is normally reserved for teeth that show.
If the plan is larger than one crown, this is the arithmetic that decides it.
The real total cost of treatment abroadOne crown is rarely the whole story
Most people asking about a crown turn out to need more than one thing. Tell us what your dentist has found and we will price the whole plan at home and abroad, and say which parts are not worth travelling for.
